Remote Desktop Access for Windows

You must know the name of the computer to which you want to connect. If you are connecting to your office PC at Olin, you can determine your computer name by doing the following.

Windows 7 - Click the Start button, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. Your computer name will be listed under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings. You will need the full computer name.

Windows 8 - Select Settings from the sidebar, then click PC Info. Your computer name will be listed under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings. You will need the full computer name.

The Remote Desktop program is part of Windows, so you do not need to install anything.

Setup Remote Desktop (Simple)

  1. We have created a pre-defined Remote Desktop file with the most common settings. Click the link here and save to your Desktop or other location.
  2. Right-click the file and select Edit.
  3. Change the Computer field to match the full name of the computer to which you are trying to connect.
  4. Change the username to be your Olin username ( for Olin faculty and staff) or your WUSTL Key username (for students). For example, if your username is JOHNSON, you will enter OLIN\JOHNSON (for Olin accounts) or ACCOUNTS\JOHNSON (for WUSTL Key accounts). The name is not case-sensitive, so it does not matter if you use upper or lowercase.
  5. Click Save. If you want to save the connection settings under a different name, select Save As.

Setup Remote Desktop (Full Setup)

  1. Windows 7 - Click the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories, then click Remote Desktop Connection.
Windows 8 - Select Search and enter Remote Desktop. In the search results, click Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. In the Computer field, enter the full name of the computer to which you are trying to connect.
  3. Click Show Options.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Under Connect from Anywhere click Settings.
  6. Select Use these TS Gateway server settings and enter rds-gateway.olin.wustl.edu for the server name.
  7. Select Ask for password (NTLM) for Logon method.
  8. Check the box for Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.
  9. Check the box Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Select the Display tab.
  12. Drag the slider to change the size of the remote desktop. To make it use the full screen, drag it all the way to the right until it says Full Screen. If you want it to remain in a window, select the resolution you want it to use.
  13. If you have multiple monitors, have selected Full Screen in the previous step, you can have your remote session use all of your monitors. If you want to do this, check the box Use all my monitors for the remote session.
  14. Select the General tab
  15. If you want to save these settings to a shortcut to use later, click Save As, name the file, and select where you want to save it.

Using Remote Desktop

  1. Double-click the Olin-Remote Desktop icon (the name may be different if you used Save As in the setup instructions)
  2. If you see a warning that the remote computer or publisher can't be verified, this is normal. Check the box for Don't ask me again for connections to this computer and click Connect.
  3. Enter your username and password when prompted. Make sure you enter your username as OLIN\username (for Olin accounts) or ACCOUNTS\username (for WUSTL Key accounts). Replace username with your username. For example, if your username is JOHNSON, you will enter OLIN\JOHNSON (for Olin account) or ACCOUNTS\JOHNSON (for WUSTL Key accounts).

Ending your Session

To end your Remote Desktop session, we recommend that you logoff. If you just close the Remote Desktop program or if you select Disconnect, your remote session remains open. Only use the disconnect option if you need to stay logged in.

  1. In the remote session, go to Start and select Logoff (to logoff your remote session) or Disconnect (to keep your remote session logged in).

Adding Remote Gateway to an Existing Remote Desktop Connection

You may have Remote Desktop Connection files that you have been using without a Remote Gateway being set. Starting December 30, you will no longer be able to connect from a remote network unless you either connect to the VPN first or change your Remote Desktop settings to use a gateway. We recommend the latter option.

To change your Remote Desktop settings, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the Remote Desktop Connection file you want to change and select Edit.
  2. Click Show Options.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Under Connect from Anywhere click Settings.
  5. Select Use these TS Gateway server settings and enter rds-gateway.olin.wustl.edu for the server name.
  6. Select Ask for password (NTLM) for Logon method.
  7. Check the box for Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.
  8. Check the box Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Save.
