Accessing Files Remotely

To access your network files from remote locations, you can use either FileWay or FTP.

FileWay provides secure access to your network files using Internet Explorer. No special software is required. You can access FileWay at https://fileway.olin.wustl.edu/.

Each FTP client has its own commands, menus, and screens. The information you need to use FTP is listed below:

  • FTP Server: students.olin.wustl.edu (for students), staff.olin.wustl.edu (for staff, faculty, and contractors)
  • Remote Folder: /staff/username (staff and contractors), /faculty/username (faculty), /student/initial/username (students)

Transferring Files

  • Connect to the VPN. FTP does not encrypt your username and password, so you at risk if you do not use the VPN.
  • Connect to the appropriate FTP server.
  • Change local folder to the folder on your PC wherever you want to upload/download files.
  • Change the remote folder to your folder on the network.
  • Download or upload any files or folders as necessary. Remember that web pages must go into your WWW subdirectory and that each folder and sub-folder in the WWW subdirectory should have a file in it named index.htm for display without a full filename in the path.

Internet Explorer

  • In Tools | Internet Options | Advanced, make sure the option "Enable FTP Folder View" is selected.
  • Type the URL: ftp://students.olin.wustl.edu or ftp://staff.olin.wustl.edu
  • Enter your username and password when prompted. Make sure you are connected via the VPN to protect your credentials!
  • Press Alt, click View, and then click Open FTP Site in File Explorer to open the site in Windows Explorer.
  • Drag and drop or copy and paste files between your local computer and the remote site.
  • Close Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer to logoff.
